The Sanctuary Lifetime Service Award
for the Year 2003 was awarded to Billy Arjan Singh,
for his outstanding contribution to Indian wildlife.
This award is instituted by Sanctuary-Asia magazine and
sponsored by ABN AMRO Bank.
The award includes a certificate plus a
cash component of Indian Rupees 1,00,000/-.
The award was presented at a ceremony held on December 11,
2003 at 6.45 PM at National Centre for Performing Arts, Nariman
Point, Bombay. Around 1,000 people attended the Awards ceremony.
The Sanctuary Awards ceremony generated considerable media
attention, thereby providing Billy with an ideal opportunity to turn
the spotlight on the immense worth of Dudhwa national park, and to
highlight the bleak future that faces Indian tigers due to the
detrimental effects of habitat destruction and wildlife trade. The
select audience also took part in a discussion session on
implementation of wildlife conservation strategies, which was a good
platform for meaningful interaction between conservationists.
